Dahlia tuber removed from soil

Planting and caring for dahlia tubers

Plant dahlia tubers in spring once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny position with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Place the tubers with the old stem or growing point facing upwards and cover them with approximately 5 cm of soil. Depending on the mature height of the variety, leave around 30 to 50 cm between the tubers.

Plant dahlias in a generously sized container with good drainage. They need regular watering during warm summer weather, but the tubers should not remain in wet soil for prolonged periods.

Our Dahlia tubers become available towards the end of the year for the following summer season. You can order them in advance, and we begin shipping from early March so they arrive in time for spring planting.

Dahlias are planted in spring after the last night frost, once the soil has warmed sufficiently. We recommend waiting until the soil temperature is around 15°C before planting.

Yes. Dahlias grow very well in pots. Choose a generously sized container, as Dahlias need plenty of water during warm summer weather and larger pots dry out less quickly.

Dahlias prefer a sunny position and well-drained soil. Large-flowered Dahlias in particular benefit from plenty of light and warmth, which helps them produce more flowers and bloom for longer.

Yes. Dahlia tubers can be started in pots indoors from March in a bright position. Once the risk of night frost has passed, the plants can be moved outside and planted in the garden.

For several Dahlia varieties, we recommend regularly removing faded flowers and seed heads. This encourages the plant to continue producing new flowers throughout the season.
