Spring Reading King’s Day 3 minutes Next A Peek Behind the Scenes

King’s Day

Good morning dear readers,

I hope you are having a good weekend! Carlos is still very busy, so you will be hearing from me again this week, but don’t worry, there is a lot happening in Burgervlotbrug at the moment. One of the most fun days of the year is quickly approaching: King’s Day. When you read this, that will be tomorrow, on the 27th of April.

King’s Day is celebrated on our King’s real birthday. This is not always the case: our previous Queen had a winter birthday, so she kept Queen’s Day on her mother’s birthday in summer, so people could still go outside. That is important, because basically all of the traditional King’s (or Queen’s) Day activities are outside events.

The most common activity is flea markets. In every city and town and village, people gather in the center and organise a market. Children sell toys they have outgrown and there is really something for everyone. And obviously there is the orange ‘tompouce,’ a custard pasty that is impossible to eat in a sophisticated manner.

If you are visiting the Netherlands and want to experience King’s Day in the most extravagant way possible, you can go to Amsterdam. I’ve been there myself and it is incredibly busy but so much fun. There are markets and street musicians everywhere, and the entire city is covered in orange. This year’s weather forecast seems good, so I hope everyone can spend the full day outside.

Dahlia Happy Halloween - Dahlias - Fluwel
Dahlia Happy Halloween is the perfect color for the King's Day

There are obviously other countries with monarchies, but as far as I know, King’s Day is pretty uniquely Dutch in the way we celebrate it. A great reason to visit the Netherlands during this time of year at some point! It is an experience for sure, and perfect to combine with a visit tot he flower fields or maybe even Fluwel’s show- and picking garden. We are located in the largest uninterrupted area of flower fields in the world, after all :)

Lilium Sunset Boulevard (OAO) - Lilies - Fluwel

And one last practical message. Today is the last day you can order Lilies. If you want those in your garden or on your balcony this year, grab yours before it is too late!

Enjoy your Sunday,

Kind regards,
Lian and the Fluwel office team
