Nerine is actually a forgotten vegetable; everyone knows it, but can't recall ever seeing it in a garden. Its comeback is thanks to passionate flower grower Kitty de Jong from the rustic village of Roelofarendsveen. Through her breeding work, Kitty has developed beautiful new varieties that flower profusely and grow easily in the garden.
Plant them with the tip 2 cm above the ground.

Nerine

Nerine is better known as a cut flower than as a garden or pot plant. This is mainly because this bulbous plant, originating from South Africa, could not cope well with European winters. But in the flower world, a lot of breeding is done to improve the properties of plants and in the case of the Nerine, this has led to the creation of a number of very useful, reasonably winter-hardy garden Nerines.

Planting Nerine:
Plant the Nerine with the tip of the bulb just above the ground – it may remain visible. Ensure moist soil in the first few months so that the bulb can root well. Plant them lightly, about 25 cm apart, and give them a light, sunny spot. Cover with leaves or straw in severe winters. Those who are patient will be rewarded in the autumn with beautiful flowers that will return for years.
