Nerine is actually a forgotten vegetable; everyone knows it, but can't recall ever seeing it in a garden. Its comeback is thanks to passionate flower grower Kitty de Jong from the rustic village of Roelofarendsveen. Through her breeding work, Kitty has developed beautiful new varieties that flower profusely and grow easily in the garden.

Planting and caring for nerine bulbs
Plant nerine bulbs in spring in a sunny, warm and sheltered position with well-drained soil. Position the bulbs so that their tips and necks remain just above the soil surface. Leave approximately 10 to 15 cm between the bulbs and plant them in small groups for an attractive, natural effect.
Keep the soil slightly moist after planting, but avoid prolonged wet conditions. During severe frosts, protect the bulbs with a layer of leaves, straw or another insulating material. Once established, nerines can return for many years, producing beautiful flowers each autumn.
