"An Oldie, African Queen is around since 1958. When she was introduced she turned out to be a true revelation in the world of garden lilies. Mr Jaan de Graaf from Oregon America bred Lilium henryi with some other species lilies from the far east and some the seedlings he raised turned around the whole lily spectrum. African Queen is one of those seedlings but also Golden Splendor belongs to these crosses. The next text from these times show how the gardening world spoke of these lilies: This new type of lilies is extraordinary, healthy, hardly suffer from diseases, are fully hardy and grow well in any type of soil, Fool proof lilies. In another book you can find the words: Robust, not picky when it comes to soil or climate and an endless range of colours and flower shapes. Till the day of today these words are still accurate."

Lilies

The Lily is a real recommendation for the garden, beautiful plants that bloom for weeks and, if they are happy, come back for years. If you have no experience with lilies in your garden, you can always look at our site under Flower bulb information / Lilies. Here you will find an extensive description of How to plant and care for Lilies.

Planting Lilies:
Lilies need fertile, well-drained soil with a thick layer of humus. They like moist, but not too wet soil. Plant them between October and April, even during frost. Lilies can withstand cold well, provided they are not exposed to too much wind and rain. Dig a trench 10-15 cm deep, loosen the soil and add fertilizer or humus if necessary. Plant the bulbs with the point upwards and cover with soil. Keep 25-30 cm distance between the bulbs, plant them in groups of three or five.
