The prettiest and the best of the short and sturdy white Dahlias, perfect for borders and flowerpots. I can’t help it, but whenever I need to talk about Dahlias in flowerpots, I get scared, and I think to myself: Will this go well? My personal experience isn’t great, I have failed many Dahlias when I planted them in a pot. That isn’t the Dahlias fault, it is really on me. Many Dahlias do perfectly well in flowerpots, but you must care for them accordingly. Dahlias are thirsty plants, and if you spend one long weekend with your great-aunt when the weather was particularly nice, that might already be too much for your potted Dahlia. If that happens, she may need about two weeks to sort of get back to her old self, and even if she does, you are very lucky if she makes a good comeback at all. My Dahlia-grower friend Peter Koomen likes to joke that Dahlias are perfectly fine in a pot, as long as you take out the bottom first. If you really, really want to plant your Dahlias in a pot, the best advice I have is to pick the biggest pot possible. The more soil, the smaller the chances of it drying out.

Dahlias
The Dahlia truly deserves every bit of love she receives. Every gardener should be placing her om a pedestal: Dahlias carry flowers for a long time, and in a large number. Even when autumn is approaching, you don’t need to worry: the Dahlia will be there to give your garden those last few rays of sunshine.
Planting dahlias:
Dahlias are summer bloomers and should be planted in spring, after the last night frost, when the soil temperature is at least 15°C. Plant the tubers about 40 cm apart for tall varieties and 30 cm for shorter varieties. For pots, choose very large pots, because dahlias need a lot of water in the warm summer months. Plant them just under the soil, about 2 cm deep.
