The word ‘bizon’ might make you expect an enormous Dahlia, but that is not the case here. When I talked to the person who hybridized these bizon Dahlias (yes, there are more!) he told me he was tagging some of his newer seedlings as ‘bijzonder,’ the Dutch word for extraordinary. This was quickly shortened to ‘bizon’ when he was writing tags, and when the time came to register their names, he knew that many people in the Dahlia world had already come to know them as the ‘bizons’ because of his tagged seedlings. So that is how they got their name, and as of now, we offer the Bizon Brons (bronze) and the Bizon Rood (red).

Personally, I do agree with their name: they really are extraordinary. Strong colours, a beautifully shaped flower, and tall, straight stems. I expect them to be very popular, not just in gardens, but also in bouquets!

Dahlias

The Dahlia truly deserves every bit of love she receives. Every gardener should be placing her om a pedestal: Dahlias carry flowers for a long time, and in a large number. Even when autumn is approaching, you don’t need to worry: the Dahlia will be there to give your garden those last few rays of sunshine.

Planting dahlias:
Dahlias are summer bloomers and should be planted in spring, after the last night frost, when the soil temperature is at least 15°C. Plant the tubers about 40 cm apart for tall varieties and 30 cm for shorter varieties. For pots, choose very large pots, because dahlias need a lot of water in the warm summer months. Plant them just under the soil, about 2 cm deep.
