If you really want an impressive plant in your garden, try this white Crinum powelli Album. The tuft you see in the photo has been in Wisley Gardens near London for years, and I notice it every late summer.
To get such a beautiful full plant you need patience, this Crinum has probably been there for about 10 years. If you plant her treat her like a shrub and try to leave her where she is planted. Many shrubs are easier to transplant than a mature Crinum.
You often read that the Crinum powelli is not winter hardy and it is true that they can freeze. But then it has to freeze really hard, in my mother's garden there is a pink Crinum powelli that has survived many severe winters. A little covering with a tuft of straw or a jute bag is enough to help her through a severe winter.
Also find a somewhat warmer and sunny spot in the garden. The Crinum loves the sun which makes it grow better and bloom more abundantly. If you live in an area where it can winter reasonably well, a spot against a wall on the south is ideal for the Crinum, if possible.
The Crinum bulbs that we are sending you are incredibly large, they come from Nerine and Amarine grower Kitty de Jong in Roelofarendsveen. They stood behind her company for years as a test to see if they were suitable for the cut flower market. As a cut flower they do not fully meet expectations so when Kitty told me that the bulbs were being dug up I immediately asked if we could offer them in our webshop.
This is a one-time offer, next year this Crinum powelli alba will no longer be available in the Fluwel webshop. I sincerely hope that they will be in your garden and that you can enjoy them for many years.
When planting the Crinum make sure that the top 5 centimeters of the long nose of the bulb sticks out above the ground. If you do that the Crinum bulb is at the right depth.

Planting flower bulbs
When should I plant my flower bulbs? If you want beautiful flowers such as tulips and daffodils in your garden in the spring, you will need to plant flower bulbs in the fall. This can be done as soon as the leaves fall from the trees. Make sure that the spring bloomers are in the ground before the frost sets in.
Summer bloomers such as dahlias and lilies should be planted in the spring so that they bloom in the summer.
Planting flower bulbs is not complicated at all. The same principles apply in principle:
- do not plant the bulb too deep in the ground (usually between 8 and 18 centimeters)
- provide good natural conditions
- be frugal with fertilizer and let the bulb do its work
