The name of this Allium is probably the most difficult name I had to memorize in agricultural school. And writing it down without spelling errors, was just as hard! This Allium is also known as ‘drumstick’ (in Dutch Trommelstok) – which sounds much better to me. A relatively inexpensive bulb that brings a very special, decorative touch to your garden. Drumsticks already bloom when most other plants are still fully green with no flowers. Planted in large quantities, nicely loose in your border, they will bring you lots of joy.

Allium

Over the last decades the ornamental Onion has become very popular. In the older days we were just dealing with a handful of Alliums, nowadays we count dozens. Not just because she is a nice garden flower, also the flower industry embraced her as a cut flower.

Planting Allium:
Plant an Allium in full sun or light shade in well-drained soil. An Allium is ideal for the wild garden, but also does well in the common border where it considerably extends the flowering season for spring-flowering bulbs. For best results, plant them in groups of five or more. The bulbs can remain in place for years. Only when they grow too close together can you divide the bulbs in the autumn and replant them immediately.
