Amaryllises are flower bulbs that have been prepared for spring by a special treatment. The cool period that bulbs normally experience in winter has already been experienced by the amaryllis in the fall, in a cold store. As soon as you expose the amaryllis to room temperature at home, the bulb will “think” that it is spring and will bloom. This can happen in the middle of winter! Make sure that you plant and care for the amaryllis in the right way.

Why Do We Only Ship Amaryllis Bulbs After November 1st?
All amaryllis bulbs we offer in Fluwel’s web shop are grown in greenhouses in Het Westland, an area in the Netherlands well known for its greenhouses, located just south of The Hague. The amaryllis bulbs are planted in the greenhouses in January and grow in a comfortable temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius. In August, the amaryllis bulbs have grown sufficiently and are subsequently dug up. After digging, the still green leafs are carefully removed and the bulbs are rinsed and sorted by size. They look like beautiful flower bulbs at this point, but they are not yet ready to be planted again.
The amaryllis, like many other flower bulbs, needs a period of rest before she starts growing and blooming again. In her original habitat, the amaryllis is a flower bulb that starts growing in spring after she has had this resting period during winter (more information about the amaryllis’ natural habitat can be found in ‘The Original Habitat of the Amaryllis’).
The duration of this resting period for an amaryllis is 6 to 8 weeks, in a temperature of about 13 degrees Celsius. It is important for the amaryllis to get this period of dormancy; it enables her to start growing again soon after you have planted her in your home. An amaryllis that takes a long time to start growing after you have planted her has almost always had a shortage of resting period. It is not until she has had a sufficient resting period, and is then moved to a place with a warmer temperature (like your home), that your amaryllis assumes spring has arrived and it is time for her to start growing again.
At Fluwel, we choose to only ship the amaryllis bulbs until we are absolutely sure that they have had a sufficient resting period. Every year, on November first, we start selling amaryllis bulbs because we are sure that all varieties of amaryllis have had enough rest by the time November arrives.
