Anemone coronaria St Brigid

This Anemone is the double variant of Anemone coronaria De Caen and in that description you will also find a lot of information about the cultivation. A nice anecdote is that the Anemone coronaria is propagated from seed. This seed emerges in the summer from its faded flower buds as balls of wool containing thousands of seeds. This wool is blown away by the wind, which is why this Anemone owes its nickname: The Wind Flower.

The propagation of the tubers at the Dutch Anemone growers also goes through the cultivation of this seed. Growers pick bags full of this valuable wool in the summer months. Every day a round is walked to pick the wools, you have to be there on time, because if the wind starts blowing it is gone and if you have to buy it from a fellow grower you quickly pay more than € 100, - per kg.

The wool is carefully sown in the spring, preferably in clay soil because the minuscule seed is sensitive to drying out and clay soil retains moisture better than, for example, sandy soil. The grower then needs three years to grow this seed into marketable tubers.
