If you were to ask me which Allium I find the most beautiful, there’s a good chance I’d say Silver Spring. It’s a difficult question to answer, of course – Alliums have so much beauty to offer – but it’s certainly in my top three. Its flowers are truly unique – striking silver-coloured blooms with deep crimson centres that peer out into the garden with such panache. It’s exactly the sort of flower you’d pick to put in the house; simply stunning, a real treat for the eyes. A striking and very elegant presence in the garden, and in our experience it also comes back quite well, sometimes even for years on end.

Planting and caring for Allium bulbs
Plant allium bulbs in a sunny to lightly shaded spot in well-drained soil. It is best to plant the bulbs in clusters to create a natural and colourful effect. Alliums look lovely amongst perennials, extend the flowering season of spring bulbs and often return year after year.
Read our comprehensive guide on when and how to plant and care for allium bulbs.
You can order allium bulbs from us from early spring onwards for the next planting season. We take care of the proper storage and only ship the bulbs when the autumn planting season begins. This means you receive fresh bulbs at the right time for planting and a strong start in the garden.
Allium bulbs are planted in autumn. Many Allium varieties can then remain in the same place in the garden for many years.
The correct planting depth depends on the variety. For many larger Alliums, we recommend a planting depth of around 10–15 cm, while smaller varieties may be planted less deeply.
For the best effect, we recommend planting Alliums in groups of five or more bulbs. This allows the flowers to make a stronger display in borders or natural-style plantings.
Many Allium bulbs can remain in the same place for many years. If the bulbs become too crowded over time, they can be divided in autumn and replanted.
Yes. Alliums are among the flower bulbs that are particularly attractive to bees. On our website, especially bee-friendly bulbs can also be recognised by the RHS logo.
