The Allium karataviense is as old as the road to Kralingen, every gardener with a little knowledge of flower bulbs is familiar with this old geezer. She has been traded for years. She was not really beautiful, a bit dull and grey in appearance. She was an old geezer and she also looked like an oldie. But in the karataviense, which is propagated by seed, you always saw plenty of variation. A bulb grower thought; what if I only harvest the seed of the most beautiful karataviense and when that seed blooms then only harvest the seed of the most beautiful karataviense and if I repeat that a few more times then they should automatically become more beautiful. I think the grower has been working on this selection for more than 20 years but the result is astonishing. Hats off, deep bow. He has brought his clone of the karataviense onto the market under the name Red Giant. An eye-catcher, beautiful stocky plant with a graceful large onion flower on a graceful evergreen leaf rosette. Also protrudes on pots and in flower boxes to use.
Flowerperiod

Allium
Over the last decades the ornamental Onion has become very popular. In the older days we were just dealing with a handful of Alliums, nowadays we count dozens. Not just because she is a nice garden flower, also the flower industry embraced her as a cut flower.
Planting Allium:
Plant an Allium in full sun or light shade in well-drained soil. An Allium is ideal for the wild garden, but also does well in the common border where it considerably extends the flowering season for spring-flowering bulbs. For best results, plant them in groups of five or more. The bulbs can remain in place for years. Only when they grow too close together can you divide the bulbs in the autumn and replant them immediately.
