A Good Foundations Does Wonders For Your Make-Up
Dear Customer,
I’m curious whether this first sentence is going to make my readers curious about the contents of this week’s newsletter. I could not really think of anything else to introduce our newest mixture to you: Miss Nixmix.

Pushkinia libanotica

Scilla siberica

Narcissus willkommii
Flowers, especially spring-blooming ones like Tulips, Daffodils, and Hyacinths, are kind of like make-up for your garden. But if my daughters are to be believed, make-up looks best with a good foundation and ‘skin care’. And this works exactly the same for gardens. When we get questions about creating gardens that come back year after year, most people don’t know where to start. What to plant if you want flowers that keep returning year after year, but also want them to look good with the other varieties you add?

Muscari Alaska

Ipheon White Star
I do have some experience with this in my own garden. Around my house, there is lots of little stuff that keeps coming back, wheter that was planned or not. But to be able to get a little more information, I went to my friend Theo, who grows all kinds of special flower bulbs. Bottle of wine strapped to my bike and off I went.

Crocus Ruby Giant

Crocus Ivory Princess
Others always tell you stuff wou might not have thought of yourself. When it comes to gardens, sometimes those are things that aren’t even visible to the naked eye. Little Grape Hyacinths for example. There are many varieties that would do great in any garden, but there are some differences, pros and cons to every kind. But they’re always a good option, they’re healthy and grow quickly, and they are also relatively inexpensive.

Muscari Siberian tiger

Muscari latifolium
Because to be honest, when we were creating this mix, an important factor was its price. Of course, we could add all those unique varieties, the eye-catchers, but when it comes to mixtures, this is not the most important part. Now, we are talking about team work, not about individual qualities. I think this worked out quite well: For 15 euros, you will get 250 bulbs. This makes the price per bulb… very little? And that makes us happy.

Crocus Aqua
I really think this mixture can bring anyone, and any garden, joy. Each and every variety included is trustworthy and loyal. Like I said, Miss Nixmix was created as a response to the questions we got about returning flower bulbs. All of these will come back, whether you plant them out in the orchard or in the garden next tot he house.

Camassia Quamash

Anemone blanda
When we get the question about multi-year flowers, we also often answer with Chionodoxa’s or Hyacinthoides to look into. But as you can see, there are many more flower bulbs that will do the task well. In the end, we found 14 varieties that we think will do well for everyone. We don’t want to use the largest available bulbs of these varieties, but the slightly smaller ones, so we can keep the price low and save the largest bulbs for when people order that specific variety. But obviously, every single bulb in the mix is large enough to produce a good flower in its first year!

Chionodoxa forbesii

Hyacinthoides
I’m going to wrap it up now, I am in Ireland to attend the wedding of my niece. We have driven through England and to Wexford with the family, with a van so full of stuff the border control people asked us if others had asked us to bring their things, but it is just my own daughters having brought six dresses per day. I’ll be using the opportunity to also visit my good Daffodil friend Brian Duncan.
Kind regards,
Carlos van der Veek
