Our special daffodil Thalia is even more special now than she normally is: this year, she celebrates her 100th birthday! For a century she has decorated gardens and city parks with her beauty. She was introduced in 1916 and is still just as popular as she was back in those days. I have to say that I feel an almost fatherly pride when I’m thinking about what this little flower has accomplished in her life: wherever she went she charmed and surprised people.
Thalia is named after the Greek Muse Thaleia. In Latin, Thaleia later became Thalia. Thaleia was seen as the leader of the nine Muses. She was said to wear an ivy crown on her head and carry a tambourine in her hand. With a name that meant ‘the blooming, festive joy’ Thaleia left happiness and peace behind wherever she went. I think this daffodil is worthy of that name: in a garden, or anything similar, she has the same effect as the beautiful Greek Muse was said to have.
In Ancient Greek, the meaning of the name is ‘the Happy’ or ‘the Blooming,’ and that is exactly what this pretty daffodil has been up to for the last one hundred years: blooming happily in any place she is planted. With her fresh, white colour she will create an ambiance that will transform any outdoor environment. A real must have in the garden, if you ask me.
