I have been growing this merry and abundantly flowering Daffodil for years, she even stems from my father’s collection from twenty years ago. Strangely enough I never wondered where the name came from or what Bobbysoxer means. What I found out; Bobby-soxer was a name for teenage girls who were mad about and loved dancing to modern pop music in the 1940’s. For example, Frank Sinatra had a lot of Bobby-soxers as fans. To stand out, these girls wore so called ‘Bobby Socks’ under their skirts. A sock with a decorated hem which was elegantly folded down above comfortable dancing shoes. It did look very nice. Knowing this, I finally understand how this happy looking Daffodil got the name Bobbysoxer. Another fun fact is that this Daffodil was introduced in 1949, which means that her name was very hip at the time. However, her name might have lost some meaning over the years, in my eyes this little Daffodil is as fashionable as ever. I would not be surprised if she makes a comeback in the near future.
When she just starts flowering, she shows a fresh yellow with hints of orange, but during her bloom, her colour becomes lighter. In the end, she leaves the stage as a white-yellow Daffodil.
