Goethe once wrote ‘See Naples, and then die,’ because Naples is the most beautiful thing a person could see in their life.
It may be a little exaggerated, but Naples is a beautiful city, that is for sure. In the past I have visited Pompei a lot to sell lilies to local growers, and if you see that city, with that immense volcano Vesuvius as the background, I can kind of relate to the old saying.
But for me it is mostly the hospitality and the nice people that make me remember it so fondly. The nice weather, the good food and even better wine… it was a good life over there.
I must have thought of that when Amaryllis grower Bram van Staalduinen asked me to come up with a name for this beautiful red Amaryllis. I think the name of the city of Naples suits this gorgeous flower very well.
