A new star among the Alliums, and what a star she is. The Pinball Wizard conjures beautiful symmetrical flowers, the size of a grapefruit. At first sight, the Pinball Wizard looks a lot like the Globemaster, but the difference is that she blooms about ten days earlier and gets a good 15 centimetres taller. In my opinion, she is slightly more elegant, the ratio between flower size and stem length is easier on the eyes. She also seems to come back somewhat easier than Globemaster, but whether this is true has to be proven over time. Of course, she also has her faults as opposed to Globemaster, her flowers are less rich and slightly smaller.
All in all, a beautiful ornamental onion which is certainty worth giving a try in your garden. What I find most interesting about Pinball Wizard, is that she brings the flower period of big Alliums forward by about 10 days. Pinball Wizard flowers first at the end of May/ early June, then comes Globemaster, then Ambassador and lastly, in July the Allium Giganteum starts blooming.
